Сертификат EPA 608 (на будущее: холодильники)EPA 608 certification (for later: refrigerators)
In short: who needs EPA Section 608 certification and why, the types (I, II, III, Universal), where and how to take the test, what it allows and what it doesn't. Not needed for washers and dryers; you'll need it once you start on refrigerators.
What it is and who needs it
Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and EPA rules (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) require that anyone who maintains, services, repairs or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerant be certified.
For an appliance tech that means:
• Washers and dryers contain no refrigerant: no certification needed. The exception is heat pump dryers, which have a sealed refrigeration circuit; opening it requires certification.
• Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, dehumidifiers, ice makers: you need at least Type I if you open the sealed system (brazing, installing a piercing/access valve, charging).
• Replacing parts without touching the sealed system (thermostat, board, fan, defrost timer, defrost heater) doesn't formally require certification, but employers and customers expect it.
Without certification you also can't buy refrigerant: sales of stationary refrigerants are restricted to certified technicians (and their employers).
Certification types
- Universal —
- Type I, small appliances: factory-built, hermetically sealed, 5 pounds of refrigerant or less. That covers nearly all household refrigeration: refrigerators, freezers, window AC, dehumidifiers, water coolers. This is the one an appliance tech needs.
- Type II, high-pressure: split systems and heat pumps, commercial refrigeration.
- Type III, low-pressure: chillers.
- Universal: all three.
Each exam is the common Core section (law, ozone, disposal, safety, recovery) plus the type section. Certification does not expire. Keep the card: a copy on your phone and the original at home; a lost card is replaced by the organization that issued it.
Where and how to test
Type I.
- Exams are given only by EPA-approved certifying organizations, for example ESCO Institute, Mainstream Engineering, RSES, HVAC Excellence and others; the list is on the EPA site. Many parts distributors (Marcone, for example) and trade schools host exams.
- Type I can be taken open-book, online or by mail without a proctor at many organizations; the passing score in that format is usually higher than proctored (check with the organization). But a Core section passed open-book doesn't count toward Universal: Universal needs a proctored Core.
- Type II, III and Universal are proctored only (in person or online with monitoring).
- Prep: free study guides from the organizations, Core and Type I video reviews, practice tests. Type I is doable after a weekend of study.
- The cost is usually tens of dollars for Type I.
Other things to know for later
- Venting refrigerant to the atmosphere is prohibited. Before opening a sealed system, refrigerant is recovered with certified equipment. Type I work often uses the system-dependent method with a piercing valve.
- Modern US refrigerators increasingly use R-600a (isobutane), a flammable refrigerant. Working on it takes extra skills: ventilation, no open flame near an open system, special brazing or crimping procedures. The 608 test doesn't fully cover this; get added training from the manufacturer or a school.
- When a refrigerator is disposed of, the recover-and-verify chain is also regulated by EPA.
- Start with Type I: cheap, fast, and once you've had hands-on practice you can take on sealed-system refrigerator work.
