Use this guide to remove, clean, and refit the dispenser drawer on a John Lewis washing machine. The dispenser drawer, detergent drawer, or soap drawer holds detergent and fabric conditioner before they wash into the drum. Powder residue, conditioner buildup, mold, and limescale can collect there over time and wash down onto clothes, so regular cleaning helps keep laundry fresh. This guide was written for a John Lewis washing machine with the dispenser drawer in the top-left corner; other models may have small differences.

- Brush

ШагиSteps
1
Prepare the washing machine
- Place a towel under the dispenser area to catch drips from the drawer.
2
Remove the dispenser drawer
- Find the dispenser drawer in the top-left corner of the washing machine front panel.
- Put your fingers underneath the drawer handle and pull the drawer out gently until it stops at the retaining clip.
- Press the release button down gently while pulling the drawer straight out.
3
Clean the drawer
- Inspect the drawer for washing powder residue, conditioner residue, mold, and limescale.
- Remove the blue flaps from the drawer if you need better access for cleaning.
- Use a brush and hot, soapy water to scrub the drawer thoroughly.
- Rinse away loosened residue before refitting the drawer.
4
Clean the drawer cavity
- Look inside the dispenser drawer cavity before refitting the drawer.
- Use a cloth with hot, soapy water to scrub mold and residue from the inside of the cavity.
- Wipe away loose residue so it can't wash down into the clothes.
5
Refit the dispenser drawer
- Line up the drawer with the grooves in the dispenser opening.
- Push the drawer inward until it reaches the retaining clip.
- Press the release button down while pushing the drawer past the clip.
- Push the drawer fully closed and check that it slides smoothly.
6
Inspect the drum rubber
- Open the washing machine door and inspect the rubber seal around the drum.
- Clean the rubber seal so it is free of debris and residue.
- Check that the drainage holes in the rubber are clear.
- Remove any loose debris that could block drainage or transfer onto clothes.
7
Run a hot cleaning cycle
- Run a 90°C wash programme or the Drum Clean option with no laundry in the drum.
8
Free a stuck drawer
- Pull the drawer only until it reaches the stop point, then press the release button again.
- Push the drawer slightly inward to take pressure off the clip if the release button won't press down easily.
- Pull the drawer straight out while holding the release button down.
- Clean visible residue around the runners before trying again if buildup is making the drawer drag.
The dispenser drawer, cavity, and drum rubber should now be clean and ready for regular use. Clean these areas regularly to stop detergent residue, conditioner buildup, mould, and limescale from washing onto clothes. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
