Use this guide to diagnose and fix a Bosch front-loading washing machine that won't drain, leaves clothes wet, or finishes with water still in the drum. The drain pump filter, also called the pump filter or coin catcher, traps small items before they reach the drain pump. Cleaning it often clears blockages from coins, hair clips, hair bands, lint, sludge, and other debris. This guide was written using a Bosch Serie 4 washer, but other Bosch front-loading models may have minor differences.
🧰 Tools
- Bucket
- Shop Towels or Rags
- Shallow tray
- Scrubbing Sponge
- Large Bowl
- Brush
- Washing machine cleaner
ШагиSteps
1
Make the washer safe
- Turn off the cold water supply feeding the washing machine.
- Follow the cold water hose from the back of the washer to its tap, and turn the tap 90 degrees to close it.
- If you can't find the washer's water tap, turn off the water at the main stopcock.
2
Open the filter access panel
- Open the door carefully if water is still in the drum.
- Use a sponge to remove as much water from the drum as possible.
- Place an old towel on the floor under the front of the washer.
- Set a shallow tray under the drain pump filter area.
- Pull down at the top of the cover, and pull the cover out to remove it.
3
Drain the emergency hose
- Pull the small drain hose out from the filter compartment.
- Unclip the end nozzle, and let the water drain into the tray.
- Empty the tray as needed until water stops flowing from the hose.
4
Remove the pump filter slowly
- Empty the tray, and put it back under the filter.
- Turn the filter counterclockwise a small amount to start draining water into the tray.
- Tighten the filter again before the tray overfills.
- Empty the tray, replace it, and repeat the loosen-and-tighten process until the water is drained.
- Unscrew the filter fully and pull it out when water no longer gushes out.
5
Clean the filter and filter housing
- Check the filter for common blockages, such as bent hair clips, coins, hair bands, and face masks.
- Fill a bowl with hot, soapy water.
- Use a brush or small brush to scrub the filter clean.
- Scrub inside the filter housing with hot, soapy water.
- Drag out any debris, mold, sludge, or residue from the housing.
6
Check the drain pump impeller
- Look into the back of the filter housing and find the impeller, also called the propeller.
- Check that the impeller spins freely.
- Remove any visible debris stopping the impeller from turning.
7
Reinstall the filter
- Insert the clean filter into the housing without forcing it.
- Turn the filter clockwise until it tightens and locks upright.
- Line up the access cover and push it back into place.
8
Run a hot cleaning cycle
- Plug the washing machine back in and switch it on.
- Turn the cold water supply back on.
- Pour washing machine cleaner into the drum if you're using it.
- Close the door, and run the drum clean option if the washer has one.
- If there isn't a drum clean option, use a service option or the hottest wash program available at 90 °C.
- When the cycle finishes, unlock the child lock if used, switch off the machine, and open the door after the lock clicks.
9
Identify the drain pipework type
- Check whether the washing machine drain hose goes into a wall standpipe or connects under the sink.
- Keep a tray, bucket, and old towel ready because dirty water can spill from the drain pipework.
10
Check a wall standpipe drain
- Pull the washing machine drain hose out of the wall standpipe.
- Check the hose end and the inside of the standpipe for blockages.
- Clean sludge from the outside of the hose with hot, soapy water.
- Use a smartphone in video mode with the flashlight on to inspect down inside the standpipe.
- Review the video to check for clear water, sludge, or a visible blockage.
- Remove and clean the U-bend if sludge or a blockage is present.
11
Clean and reconnect a wall standpipe U bend
- Place a tray and towel under the U-bend.
- Undo the U-bend nuts by hand if they aren't glued in place.
- Drain clean water into the sink, or put sludge and grime in the bin.
- Wash the U-bend with hot, soapy water until it is clear.
- Reinstall the U-bend and tighten the nuts.
12
Check an under sink drain connection
- Place a bucket and towel under the washing machine drain connection.
- Disconnect the washing machine drain hose from the under-sink connector.
- Check the hose and connector for blockages.
- Clear any blockage, and clean sludge with hot, soapy water.
- Reconnect the hose to the under-sink connector.
- Remove the sink U-bend, clean out any sludge, and reinstall it if the U-bend is blocked.
13
Flush the washer again
- Plug the washing machine back in and switch it on if you haven't already.
- Turn the cold water supply back on.
- Run a drum clean option or a 90 °C wash program to flush the washer and drain pipework.
- Use washing machine cleaner in the drum if desired.
- Check that the machine drains properly at the end of the cycle.
14
Get professional help if it still will not drain
- Check the outside drainage if the washing machine still doesn't drain properly and you can access it safely.
- Lift any accessible manhole covers and make sure the outside drain is running smoothly and clear.
15
Prevent smells and future blockages
- Run a drum clean cycle every couple of months.
- Leave the detergent dispenser drawer slightly ajar after a wash.
- Leave the drum door slightly ajar after a wash.
If the washer drains normally, the blockage was likely in the pump filter, impeller area, drain hose, or household drainage pipework. If the problem returns, check the filter again and inspect the drain pipework before calling for service. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
