A broken drive belt or a failed idler pulley can keep your Samsung dryer from starting, or make it run without spinning the drum. The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt, and when it fails, the belt can loosen or break, and a belt switch may prevent the dryer from running. This procedure is also very similar on some LG and Kenmore Elite dryers with a matching cabinet design, but always verify parts by model number before ordering.

ШагиSteps
1
Prepare the dryer for service
- Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet.
2
Remove the top panel
- Try to release the top panel by sliding a putty knife under the front edge and depressing the two retaining tabs.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws on the back of the dryer that secure the top panel if the tabs won’t release.
- Push the top panel forward, then lift it up.
3
Remove the door
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven screws securing the door area.
- Depress the two metal retaining tabs, and pull the door outward slightly.
- Disconnect the door switch wire harness, or lift the door off slowly and set it on top of the dryer to disconnect the harness with more room.
4
Remove the bulkhead
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the six screws securing the bulkhead.
- Remove the moisture sensor near the heating element in the lower right corner of the dryer.
- Lift the bulkhead up and off the cabinet.
5
Remove the drum and idler arm
- Reach into the cabinet and locate the Phillips screw that secures the idler arm.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the idler arm screw, then pull the idler arm out of the cabinet.
- Lift the drum out of the cabinet using the side cutouts for clearance.
6
Inspect the belt and idler pulley
- Inspect the idler pulley on the idler arm, and replace it if the wheel is damaged or missing.
- Remove any belt fragments from the cabinet if the belt has broken.
7
Install the idler pulley and spring
- Transfer and reinstall the main spring on the idler arm, since the replacement idler assembly may not include a new spring.
- Insert the spring ends into both mounting holes on the arm.
- Use needle-nose pliers to thread the spring into place if it’s hard to seat by hand.
8
Route and tension the new belt
- Loop the new belt around the drum with the belt positioned to run toward the motor assembly.
- Thread the belt onto the motor, then push the idler pulley to let the belt rest on the idler pulley under tension.
- Check that the belt is properly aligned on the idler pulley and routed cleanly onto the motor assembly.
9
Reinstall the bulkhead and reconnect the sensor
- Set the bulkhead back into place, and make sure its tabs seat correctly before installing screws.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the six bulkhead screws.
10
Reinstall the door
- Slot the bottom of the door onto the metal hinges at the bottom of the opening.
- Position the metal retention clips, and align the door evenly in the opening.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the seven door screws.
11
Close the dryer and test
- Lower the top panel onto the plastic posts so it locks into place.
- Plug the dryer back in, and run a test cycle to confirm the dryer turns on and the drum spins.
Verify the belt stays centered on the drum and motor pulley and that the idler keeps steady tension during the first test run. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
