This guide shows how to diagnose and fix ultra large capacity Maytag direct drive top-load washers that make grinding or clicking noises and won’t spin out. These symptoms are commonly paired with error codes F0E5, F7E1, and F7E4, and are often caused by a failed clutch magnet assembly (electromagnetic clutch/shift assembly) and/or a worn magnetic slider system.
🧰 Tools
- Masking Tape
- Bucket
- 6-in-1 Screwdriver
- 3/8" Ratchet (Socket Wrench)
- Hammer
- Wood Block
- 10mm Socket (3/8in Drive)
- T30 Torx Bit (3/8in Drive)

- W10734521 Whirlpool Slider Assembly
ШагиSteps
1
Identify the common symptoms
- Look for a washer that spins a little but won’t spin out, often with grinding or loud clicking noises.
- Check stored error codes, since this repair is commonly associated with F0E5, F7E1, and F7E4.
- Plan to inspect the direct drive clutch magnet assembly and the magnetic slider system under the tub.
2
Unplug and drain the washer
- Unplug the washer from the wall outlet.
- Shut off the hot and cold water valves, and disconnect the water hoses if needed to move the washer.
- Lower the drain hose closer to the floor to encourage any standing water to drain out before tipping the washer.
3
Tape the lid and lay the washer down
- Use masking tape or painter’s tape to hold the lid shut.
- Place padding on the floor, and set a block of wood behind the padding to act as a backstop.
- Gently lay the washer onto the padding so the underside is accessible.
4
Confirm the washer is direct drive
- Look under the tub for a large rotor plate and stator assembly rather than a belt and pulleys.
5
Remove the rotor bolt
- Use a T30 Torx screwdriver to remove the center bolt that holds the rotor plate in place.
- If the rotor plate spins while loosening the bolt, insert a second screwdriver into the rotor holes between the clutch and the tub housing to hold the rotor still.
6
Pull off the rotor plate
- Grip the rotor plate with both hands and pull it straight off with even force from left and right.
- Brace the tub with a foot if it rocks while you pull the rotor off.
7
Inspect the motor and wiring
- Inspect the stator magnets and copper coils for burn marks or visible damage.
- Inspect the rotor plate magnets for damage or misplaced magnets that could cause grinding noise.
- Inspect the wire harness at the lower right of the stator for frayed, damaged, or displaced wires.
8
Disconnect the harnesses and bracket
- Unplug the electrical connectors from the stator wire harness area.
- Use a 10 mm socket to remove the screw holding the metal connector bracket so you can reach the backside of the harness.
- Release the small tabs on each side of the harnesses to free them from the bracket.
9
Remove the stator and clutch assembly
- Use a 7 mm socket wrench to remove the six long screws holding the clutch and stator assembly to the tub.
- Pull the stator and clutch assembly off together after all six screws are removed.
10
Replace the clutch magnet assembly
- Turn the stator over to access the clutch wiring and the plastic wire trunk on the clutch side.
- Slide the plastic tabs on the wire trunk aside, and lift the wires out of the trunk.
- Separate the clutch from the stator, and install the W10754448 clutch magnet assembly onto the stator posts in the only orientation that fits.
- Route the clutch wires toward the trunk, and snap the wires back into the plastic trunk.
11
Remove the slider retainer ring
- Use a dental pick or a hooked pick to wedge into the grooves between the gear splines and pry the thin metal slider ring up and off.
- Work the pick around the ring until it lifts free of the groove.
12
Remove the old slider stack
- Slide off the plastic ring and the spring.
- Remove the plastic slider with the magnet from the gear splines.
- Inspect the slider magnet for shifting, cracking, or falling out, since this is a common cause of grinding, clicking, and no-spin symptoms.
13
Install the new slider system
- Thread the W10734521 slider system onto the gear splines with the ridged side facing outward.
- Install the spring pack and the plastic ring onto the shaft in the same order they came off.
- Reinstall the thin metal ring clip by seating it on the shaft and using a pick in the splines to press the ring into the groove until it fully snaps in.
14
Reinstall the clutch and stator assembly
- Line up the stator with the six holes on the gear case where the screws sit.
- Orient the assembly so the wire cluster sits in the lower right corner to ensure the harness has enough room.
- Start all six screws by hand, and tighten them with a 7 mm socket wrench.
If the washer spins normally again after you repair the clutch and slider system, finish by checking for returning grinding, clicking, or stored spin-related fault codes on a full test cycle. If the same symptoms persist after these under-tub repairs, the next diagnosis should focus on the harnesses, control logic, or less common gearcase-related faults. Repair didn't go as planned?
